A 31-year-old junior doctor was found dead on Friday morning at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, sparking a political storm in West Bengal. The doctor, a postgraduate student, was discovered in the building’s seminar hall, and her family, along with the Opposition BJP, have alleged that she was raped and murdered.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and Additional CP Murlidhar Sharma visited the scene, and a forensic team conducted an initial examination of the body. According to police sources, the body had scratch marks, suggesting a struggle. Five individuals who were on duty with her the previous night are being questioned. Health Secretary NS Nigam also visited the hospital, and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences to the doctor’s family, assuring them of full support. TMC Rajya Sabha MP Santanu Sen has promised a thorough and fair investigation, vowing that strict action will be taken if anyone is found guilty.

The doctor’s father expressed shock, stating that he had spoken to his daughter at 11 p.m. the previous night and that she seemed normal. He added that she was found partially clothed, leading the family to suspect that she was murdered and raped.

Hospital sources noted that the doctor had been on duty until 2 a.m., but the cause of death has yet to be determined. The hospital has set up two panels for investigation: one internal inquiry with 11 members and another for the postmortem examination.

The initial autopsy suggests that the doctor was murdered after being sexually assaulted. In response to the incident, a section of junior doctors at the hospital began a ceasework on Friday afternoon, demanding the arrest of those involved within 48 hours. They also highlighted concerns over inadequate security for women working night shifts and the lack of basic facilities. While the emergency room remained operational, other departments were shut down in protest.
