BSNL to launch 4G-5G ready Universal SIM (USIM), with Over-the-Air (OTA) activation option

On Saturday, August 10, the Department of Telecommunications announced that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will soon launch a 4G-5G ready Universal SIM (USIM) and an Over-the-Air (OTA) activation option. This new SIM will allow users to activate it from anywhere.
According to a statement on the social media platform X, the new SIM will facilitate users in selecting their mobile numbers and changing their SIMs without geographic restrictions after the rollout of 4G and 5G services. BSNL has developed this SIM in collaboration with Pyro Holdings Private Limited.
The Universal 4G and 5G-ready SIM is part of BSNL's revival plan, for which the central cabinet approved a ₹89,047 crore package last year under the third revival package. This package includes allocating 4G and 5G spectrum to BSNL through equity investment and increasing its authorized capital from ₹1,50,000 crore to ₹2,10,000 crore.
Prime Minister Modi has already launched the roadmap for 6G networks, with a projected start of 6G services in India by 2030. BSNL, however, is lagging behind and is preparing to launch 4G and 5G services. Union IT and Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had stated in January 2023 that BSNL aims to begin its 5G services by April 2024. In contrast, Airtel and Jio had launched their 5G services in India in October 2022.
BSNL, a public sector telecom company, has been struggling with debt issues for some time. The Indian government has supported the company through three revival packages. The first revival package in 2019 approved ₹69,000 crore, bringing stability to BSNL and MTNL. The second revival package in 2022, worth ₹1.64 lakh crore, focused on strengthening the balance sheet and expanding the fiber network.
