Bangladesh crisis erupts, students clash with paramilitary personnel, over 50 injured
Clashes erupted between students and Ansar members near the Secretariat in the Bangladesh capital on Sunday night, resulting in approximately 40 injuries on both sides. The altercations began after 9 p.m., with both groups engaging in a series of chases and confrontations.
By around 10 p.m., army troops and police arrived to manage the situation. Despite their efforts, the clashes continued, accompanied by reported gunfire, which caused widespread panic. The police used sound grenades to disperse the crowd.
Most Ansar members retreated through Zero Point, but some remained inside the Secretariat. Thousands of students then took control of the area surrounding the Secretariat, with some students assisting Ansar members in safely leaving.
Army personnel were stationed at the Secretariat gate, while students continued their protest, chanting slogans and pledging to resist any conspiracies.
Dhaka University student Atik Hossain noted that while the initial demands of the Ansar members had been addressed, their subsequent demands were seen as unreasonable and potentially conspiratorial, especially given the current national crisis.
By about 10:30 p.m., advisers Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud emerged from the Secretariat to calm the students, promising action against Ansar members who had attacked them.
Officials and employees from various ministries were eventually freed when Gate No. 3 of the Secretariat was opened after the Ansar members were dispersed. Government officials, including interim government advisers, began leaving the premises shortly after.
Earlier in the day, students from various Dhaka University dorms gathered at the Raju Memorial Sculpture to march to the Secretariat, aiming to confront Ansar members whom they accused of being "agents of autocracy."
This situation developed following reports that Ansar members were detaining Nahid Islam, an adviser and coordinator of the Students Against Discrimination movement, along with other coordinators. Hasnat Abdullah, in a Facebook post, accused former Ansar Director General Maj Gen AKM Aminul Haque of perpetuating the blockade of the Secretariat despite meeting the demands of the protesting Ansar members.
Hasnat also urged people to gather at the Raju Memorial Sculpture, alleging that the ongoing blockade was orchestrated by Enamul Haque Shamim, former MP from Shariatpur, and his brother AKM Aminul Haque, the former Ansar DG.
Earlier, Ansar members had ended their protest after receiving assurances from Lt Gen (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the interim government's home affairs advisor, that their demands for job nationalization would be met. Despite this, tensions flared as students accused the Ansar force of breaking the agreement.
