Union Minister expresses grave concern over law and order situation, writes to Chief Minister

law and order

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has written a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressing concerns about the law and order situation in the state. In his letter, Gadkari highlighted that the situation has made Indian National Highway Authority (NHAI) officials and contractors feel unsafe.

Gadkari mentioned that the NHAI is developing both greenfield and brownfield corridors, including the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway in Punjab. He raised concerns about the safety of NHAI officials and contractors involved in these projects. Additionally, he addressed issues related to land acquisition.

Gadkari reported that an engineer in Jalandhar was severely beaten. Although a complaint has been filed, he stressed the need for stringent action. Another incident occurred in Ludhiana, where some individuals attacked the project camp of an expressway contractor, threatening to burn the camp and all staff. Despite a written complaint, no action has been taken yet. Gadkari has demanded immediate and strict action against the perpetrators. He also noted that while meetings have discussed improving land acquisition and law and order, there has been no progress so far.

Gadkari stated that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has already canceled three projects in Punjab. These projects, totaling 104 kilometers in length, were expected to cost ₹3,263 crore. If the situation does not improve, the NHAI may be forced to cancel eight more projects, which have a combined length of 293 kilometers and a cost of ₹14,288 crore. Consequently, he has urged for improvements in law and order in Punjab.
