Man Mistaken for Saif Ali Khan’s Attacker Loses Job, Marriage, and Peace of Mind

Saif Ali Khan

A case of mistaken identity has turned the life of 31-year-old Akash Kanojia, a driver, into a nightmare. Detained on January 18 by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) in Durg, Chhattisgarh, Akash was mistaken for the man who attacked actor Saif Ali Khan in Mumbai on January 16.

Though he was later released, the damage to his personal and professional life has been irreversible.

Incident and Detainment

Akash was on his way to meet his fiancée when he was detained at the Durg railway station based on a tip-off from Mumbai Police. The police suspected him to be involved in the attack on Saif Ali Khan during an attempted robbery at the actor’s Bandra residence.

Akash was taken to Raipur, where a team from Mumbai Police interrogated him. He alleged that he was beaten during the interrogation. The following morning, the real suspect, Bangladeshi national Shariful Islam alias Vijay Das, was arrested in Thane, after which Akash was released.

However, by the time he was cleared of suspicion, the damage was done.

"My Life Is Ruined"

Speaking to the media, Akash said, "Mumbai Police’s mistake destroyed my life. They failed to notice that I had a mustache, while the man in the CCTV footage from Saif Ali Khan’s building did not." The incident had a cascading effect on his life: His employer terminated him, refusing to hear his side of the story. His fiancée’s family broke off the engagement following his detention. His family, humiliated and burdened by societal backlash, had to sell their house in Virar and move to a chawl in Mumbai’s Colaba.

Emotional Toll on Family

Akash revealed the emotional distress his family endured, saying, "My family was in tears when they saw my pictures on TV, labeling me as the main suspect. The media painted me as a criminal, and we’ve been living with the stigma ever since."

Plans to Seek Justice

Akash, who is struggling to rebuild his life, now seeks justice for the ordeal he faced. "I lost everything—my job, my fiancée, and my reputation. I’m planning to stand outside Saif Ali Khan’s building to ask for a job since everything I lost stemmed from what happened to him," he said.

The Attack on Saif Ali Khan

The attack occurred on the 12th floor of the actor’s Bandra residence during a robbery attempt. The intruder stabbed Saif multiple times before fleeing. Saif underwent surgery and was later discharged.

While the real attacker was arrested within hours of Akash’s detention, the incident highlights the consequences of hasty actions by authorities. Akash’s life, once stable, has now been upended. He is currently unemployed, estranged from his fiancée, and fighting to reclaim his dignity.

“I Just Want My Life Back”

Akash has appealed for justice, saying, "If Shariful hadn’t been arrested, I might have been framed as the attacker. This was divine intervention, but my life is still shattered. I need help to rebuild it." This incident underscores the need for meticulous investigation procedures and accountability to prevent innocent lives from being ruined by mistaken identities.
