In a series of escalating attacks in Bishnupur district, Manipur, suspected militants launched two rocket assaults on Friday, resulting in one death and five injuries. The violence intensifies existing tensions in the Imphal Valley region, which has recently experienced high-tech assaults.

The first rocket struck Tronglaobi around 4:30 a.m., damaging two buildings. The second rocket hit the residence compound of former Chief Minister Mairembam Koireng in Moirang town at approximately 3 p.m., killing 72-year-old RK Rabei Singh and injuring five others, including a 13-year-old girl. The injured were swiftly taken to a hospital.

An official reported that Rabei Singh was preparing for religious rituals when the rocket exploded. These attacks follow recent incidents where drones were used to drop bombs in the Imphal West district. The first drone attack, observed on September 1 in Koutruk village, resulted in two fatalities and nine injuries, with subsequent drone strikes injuring three more in Senjam Chirang.

In response to the unrest, the Manipur government has closed all schools on September 7 to ensure the safety of students and teachers. The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has declared a "public emergency" across five districts in the Imphal Valley, criticizing the government's ability to protect its citizens. COCOMI has organized human chains involving school and college students, as well as women, in Thoubal Bazar, Lilong Chajing, Sekmai, Kwakeithel, and Singjamei, protesting the recent attacks.

Local officials, including MLA T Shanti and Minister L Sushinro Meitei, have visited the attack sites and engaged with affected communities. Local village volunteers have expressed concerns over the new form of warfare, noting that previous defenses against gun attacks are ineffective against rocket and drone strikes. Security forces have increased their presence in the valley, particularly along the borders with Churachandpur and Kangpokpi districts, revealing vulnerabilities in current security measures.
