Stone Pelting Mars Survey of Sambhal’s Shahi Jama Masjid, Police Take Action
A survey at Sambhal’s Shahi Jama Masjid turned violent on Sunday, November 24, 2024, as protesters opposed the proceedings and resorted to stone pelting against the police. The survey was conducted following a court order based on a petition claiming the mosque was originally a Harihar Temple.
The survey team, accompanied by local police, began their work at 7:30 AM in the presence of representatives from both parties. However, the situation escalated when a crowd gathered outside the mosque, raising slogans and later pelting stones at the police. Several officers sustained injuries, including the SP’s PRO, and a government vehicle was set on fire by agitators.
To control the unruly crowd, the police deployed tear gas shells and conducted lathi charges. Several individuals were detained for questioning. Following the incident, security around the mosque was tightened, and the survey resumed under heavy police protection.
The survey was ordered by the Civil Judge in Sambhal after a petition filed by advocate Vishnu Shanker Jain claimed the mosque was built on the site of a Harihar Temple. A similar survey was conducted on November 19 with local police and the mosque management committee present.
Recognizing the potential for unrest, the administration had installed CCTV cameras around the mosque on Saturday. These cameras are connected to the local police station for 24-hour monitoring. SP Sambhal Krishna Vishnoi emphasized that those involved in the violence will be identified and face strict legal action.
Mahant Rishi Raj Giri, who filed the petition, claimed that the site is historically significant and alleged that the mosque was built on a temple. He called for a ban on prayers at the mosque until the investigation is complete.
MP Ziaur Rahman Barka, opposing the claims, labeled the petitioners as "mischief-makers," which drew a sharp response from Giri, who accused critics of hurting religious sentiments.
DGP UP Prashant Kumar assured that the police are in control of the situation and will take legal action against the miscreants. SP Krishna Vishnoi warned that strict measures would be taken against those involved in the violence, ensuring such acts are not repeated.
The survey report is expected to be presented in court during the next hearing on November 29, as authorities aim to conclude the investigation without further disturbances. Meanwhile, security patrols have been increased in the area to maintain peace and order.
