Typhoon Yagi Set to Strengthen Before Impacting Vietnam

Typhoon Yagi, one of the most potent storms of 2024, struck the southern Chinese island of Hainan on Friday, forcing over a million evacuations and causing significant disruptions. The typhoon made landfall in Hainan at 4:20 p.m. local time, equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane according to the U.S. Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

The storm passed directly over Haikou, China, bringing intense winds and severe weather. As Yagi moved into the Gulf of Tonkin, it began to reorganize and is expected to strengthen again to winds of up to 130 miles per hour before hitting near Haiphong, Vietnam on Saturday. This intensity would classify it as a Category 4 hurricane, a rare occurrence for landfalls in Vietnam, particularly this far north.

Heavy rainfall in southern China began on Thursday and is anticipated to continue through Monday, with forecasts predicting over 20 inches of rain in parts of Hainan and Guangdong. In response, emergency measures have been implemented across the region, with heightened warnings for landslides and floods. More than 410,000 people in Hainan and 670,000 in Guangdong have been evacuated.

Transportation and businesses in Hainan and Guangdong have been suspended, including airport and flight cancellations. The storm's impact extended to Hong Kong, where it resulted in nine injuries, flight cancellations, and stock market closures.

Typhoon Yagi has also affected the Philippines, causing fatalities, missing persons, and displacing thousands due to landslides and flooding. With its transition from a Category 4 to a Category 3 typhoon, Yagi remains a formidable storm as it heads towards northern Vietnam. Vietnamese authorities have taken precautionary actions, including evacuations and flight suspensions, in anticipation of the typhoon’s arrival.
