Kasthuri Shankar Sent to Judicial Custody Over Controversial Remarks on Telugu People

Kasthuri Shankar

Actress Kasthuri Shankar has been remanded to judicial custody until November 29 after making controversial remarks about Telugu-speaking people in Tamil Nadu. Her comments, which sparked widespread backlash and intense debates, have become a flashpoint for political and social discourse in the state.

The Controversy

The remarks, made during a protest on November 3 supporting Tamil Brahmins, alleged that some Telugu-speaking individuals who migrated to Tamil Nadu centuries ago were now claiming Tamil identity. Kasthuri questioned their affiliation with Dravidian ideology, claiming it was inconsistent with their Telugu origins. She also argued that while these individuals identified as Tamils, they did not consider Tamil Brahmins as part of the Tamil community.

Her statements further criticized the Aryan invasion theory and challenged the Dravidian ideology’s stance on Tamil Brahmins. These remarks provoked strong reactions, particularly from Dravidian groups and members of the Telugu-speaking community, who found them inflammatory and divisive.

Legal Action and Arrest

Complaints were lodged against Kasthuri with the Chennai police, leading to her arrest in Hyderabad on November 16. Her anticipatory bail plea had earlier been rejected by the Madras High Court's Madurai bench. Following her arrest, she was brought to Chennai and presented before a magistrate court in Egmore, which sent her to Puzhal Central Prison.

Despite withdrawing her remarks and issuing an apology, the controversy persisted. Tamil nationalist leader Seeman, while critical of her statements, questioned the necessity of her arrest and imprisonment after her apology.

Key Allegations

Kasthuri’s primary claim centered on Telugu-speaking individuals who migrated to Tamil Nadu during historical periods of service to the state’s rulers. She alleged that while they now identify as Tamils and adhere to Dravidian ideology, they exclude Tamil Brahmins from Tamil identity, choosing instead to emphasize a Dravidian identity.

Kasthuri maintained that her remarks were not derogatory toward the Telugu-speaking community but were aimed at highlighting contradictions within Dravidian ideological narratives.

Public and Political Reactions

The controversy has ignited a broader discussion on Tamil identity, caste politics, and the boundaries of free speech. While some supported Kasthuri’s statements, others criticized them as divisive and harmful to communal harmony.

The case continues to stir debate in Tamil Nadu, with Kasthuri’s judicial custody highlighting the legal and social ramifications of public statements on sensitive issues.
