The ongoing investigation into the sexual abuse case involving an 18-year-old Dalit girl in Kerala has led to significant developments.

As of January 12, 2025, a total of 14 individuals have been arrested and five cases registered in connection with the allegations that the girl was sexually abused by 62 people over a span of five years.

Key Details of the Case -

**Initial Allegations**: The girl reported that she had been subjected to sexual abuse starting at the age of 13. Her allegations came to light during counseling sessions with the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), after her teachers noted changes in her behavior and referred her for help.

**Arrests and Investigations**: The Ilavumthitta police initially registered two FIRs and arrested five individuals on January 11. Following further investigation, three more cases were registered by the Pathanamthitta police, leading to the arrest of nine additional suspects. The police have indicated that more arrests may follow as they continue to gather evidence from phone records and other sources.

**Nature of Abuse**: Allegations include that the accused used explicit images to blackmail the victim, leading to repeated assaults. Specific incidents involved taking the girl to secluded locations where she was raped and recorded on mobile devices.

**Legal Framework**: The cases are being investigated under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. A special investigation team has been formed to handle the inquiry.

**Victim's Support**: The victim has been moved to a shelter for her protection, where she is receiving psychological counseling. The CWC is closely involved in ensuring her safety and well-being throughout this process.

### Ongoing Developments

As investigations continue, authorities are verifying details from the girl's father's mobile phone, which contains contacts related to many of the alleged abusers.

The police have stated that they expect more individuals may be implicated as they delve deeper into the case.

This case highlights serious concerns regarding systemic abuse and exploitation, particularly affecting vulnerable populations such as Dalit girls in India. The National Commission for Women has requested a report from local police within three days regarding this incident, emphasizing the need for prompt legal action.
