Man Arrested After Setting Woman on Fire Inside New York Subway Train

A horrific incident unfolded on Sunday morning when a man set a woman on fire while she was asleep inside a New York City subway train, ultimately watching her burn to death.
The attack occurred around 7:30 a.m. on the F train as it approached the Stillwell Avenue station in Brooklyn. New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the act as "one of the most depraved crimes one person could possibly commit against another human being," leading to the tragic death of an innocent New Yorker.
According to Tisch, the suspect, who had been riding the train with the victim, calmly walked up to her while she was seated at the end of the subway car. Using what is believed to be a lighter, he set the woman's clothing ablaze.
Within seconds, her clothes were fully engulfed in flames. Police officers on patrol at the station’s upper level saw smoke and rushed to investigate. They found the woman inside the train, consumed by flames.
Despite the efforts of an MTA employee and the use of a fire extinguisher, it was too late. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect, who stayed at the location after the attack, was found sitting on a platform bench outside the train.
With the help of body-worn cameras from responding officers, detailed images of the suspect were captured. These images were later broadcasted, prompting three high school-aged New Yorkers to recognize him and call 911.
The suspect was arrested aboard another train later that day and found in possession of a lighter. The NYPD confirmed that there was no prior interaction between the suspect and the victim, and they do not believe the two knew each other. The identity of the victim has not been released.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams condemned the attack, calling it a "senseless killing," and expressed his condolences to the victim's family. He praised those who helped identify the suspect, stating that such "depraved behavior has no place in our subways."
The suspect, who immigrated to the U.S. from Guatemala in 2018, has not yet been charged, and investigations are ongoing to determine a motive. The NYPD had offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the capture of the assailant.
Police described the suspect as a 5-foot-6, 150-pound man, approximately 25 to 30 years old, wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt, a grey wool hat, paint-splattered pants, and tan boots during the attack. The investigation continues as authorities work to bring justice to the victim of this horrific crime.
