Germany to Close Three Iranian Consulates Following Execution of German-Iranian National Jamshid Sharmahd

Germany announces closure of Iranian consulates in response to the execution of German-Iranian national Jamshid Sharmahd, as relations between Berlin and Tehran reach a new low.

Germany

Iran summoned Germany’s charge d'affaires in Tehran to formally protest Berlin’s decision to close three Iranian consulates across Germany. Iran’s foreign ministry criticized the closures as an “irrational decision” with no justification.

The consulates in Frankfurt, Munich, and Hamburg will be shut down, although both countries will maintain embassies in Berlin and Tehran. Germany's Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, announced the closures in response to the recent execution of Jamshid Sharmahd, a German-Iranian dual citizen sentenced to death in Tehran in 2020 on terrorism charges. Baerbock condemned the execution as a politically motivated act, asserting that Germany would also push for EU-wide sanctions against individuals involved, including members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard.

Germany’s decision marks a new low in diplomatic relations with Iran, which are already strained. Baerbock stated, "Our diplomatic relations with Tehran have reached an all-time low," adding that Germany remains committed to advocating for other detained German nationals in Iran.

This move impacts 32 Iranian consulate employees, who now face expulsion unless they possess German citizenship. Hours after Germany’s announcement, Tehran responded by summoning Germany's charge d'affaires to relay its “strong protest” over what it deemed an "unjust" and “irrational” decision.
