HMPV

The threat of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has escalated in India, with the first case being reported in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow on Thursday (January 9).

This brings the total number of HMPV infections in the country to 10. Among the infected are 8 children and 2 elderly individuals, with the majority of cases being reported from Maharashtra.

First Case in Uttar Pradesh

A 60-year-old woman from Lucknow tested positive for HMPV on Thursday. According to Dr. Sushil Chaudhary, Director of Balrampur Hospital, the woman was initially admitted to King George's Medical University (KGMU) with symptoms such as fever and difficulty in breathing. After preliminary treatment, she was referred to Balrampur Hospital, where HMPV infection was confirmed upon further testing.

Nationwide Spread: 10 Cases So Far

The country has now reported 10 confirmed cases of HMPV. Maharashtra has seen the highest number of cases, with several patients identified in Mumbai and Nagpur. In Mumbai, a 6-month-old baby was found to be infected, experiencing a cough and a drop in oxygen levels. She was admitted for treatment. Similarly, in Nagpur, a 13-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy were treated at home.

In light of the growing cases, the central government has issued an alert to all states. Health authorities have been instructed to monitor symptoms such as those related to Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Issues (SARI). The government has also urged hospitals to maintain sufficient stocks of influenza medication and prepare isolation wards.

CM Yogi’s Directions for Vigilance

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has also called for heightened vigilance regarding HMPV. During a meeting, CM Adityanath stressed the importance of public awareness, whether for HMPV or other seasonal illnesses, to ensure proper preventive measures. He urged health departments to make necessary arrangements for patient care, including encouraging the use of masks and other safety protocols.

Maharashtra Leads in HMPV Cases

Maharashtra has emerged as the state with the most HMPV cases. In addition to Mumbai, where the infant was diagnosed, two children in Nagpur have been treated for the virus. Other states including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Gujarat have also reported some cases. In response, Punjab's health department has recommended mask-wearing for children and the elderly, while Gujarat has set up isolation wards in hospitals.

Symptoms and Risks of HMPV

HMPV symptoms are similar to those of COVID-19, including cough, fever, and difficulty breathing. The virus primarily affects young children and individuals with weak immune systems. The World Health Organization (WHO) has assured that it is closely monitoring the situation. Experts emphasize the importance of precautionary measures and public awareness to curb the spread of HMPV.
