Amid geopolitical uncertainities, Iranian Minister bats for regional cooperation, warns against global power competition

Iran's Foreign Minister has emphasized regional cooperation while warning against the competition between global powers to dampen prospects in Indian Ocean Region.
It need be mentioned that in recent months, there has been a climate of uncertainty in the West Asia, which has been exacerbated since Donald Trump's election as President of the United States. In this context, the statement made by Iran's Foreign Minister, Dr. Araqchi, in 8th Indian Ocean Conference hosted by Oman, holds significance.
In his address, he stated, "We have gathered in a land that has long been recognized as a bridge between the East and the West, connecting great civilizations and nations. Oman has not only been an economic player but also a symbol of interaction, dialogue, and constructive diplomacy in the Indian Ocean region. This region plays a crucial role in shaping the future of the global economy."
He further added, "Today, the Indian Ocean can become not just a transit route but a center for strategic and economic cooperation. Iran has prioritized its 'sea-centered' policy in its strategic development, as the development of a sea-based economy is a necessity for a country with over 5,800 kilometers of coastline."
Dr. Araqchi outlined four key goals for Iran’s development direction: strengthening local economies, focusing on renewable energy, strengthening international transit corridors, and attracting investments. He also stated that maritime security is critical for the global economy, and Iran has continuously contributed to fighting maritime piracy, drug trafficking, and organized crime.
The Iranian Foreign Minister also warned that some external powers are trying to exploit political, economic, and security gaps in the region, weakening regional cooperation. He said, "We will not allow the geopolitical rivalry of global powers to determine the future of this region. Decisions about the future of this region should be made by the regional countries, in the interest of their people." Finally, he praised Oman for being a symbol of regional cooperation and dialogue, expressing hope that this conference would mark the beginning of a new chapter in maritime and regional cooperation.
