Playback Singer Sparks Controversy with Remarks on Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi

Renowned Bollywood playback singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya, known for his iconic hits for stars like Shah Rukh Khan, has landed in the spotlight for a controversial statement about Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation. His remarks during a podcast interview have triggered widespread criticism and debate on social media.

The Controversial Statement

In a recent podcast with Shubhankar Mishra, Abhijeet compared legendary music composer R.D. Burman to Mahatma Gandhi. He stated, “Just as Mahatma Gandhi is regarded as the Father of the Nation, R.D. Burman was the Father of Music. In fact, R.D. Burman was greater than Mahatma Gandhi.”

Abhijeet didn’t stop there. He went on to make an even more contentious claim, saying, “Mahatma Gandhi was the Father of Pakistan, not India. India existed long before, while Pakistan was formed later. Gandhi’s role in Pakistan’s existence is why he’s mistakenly called the Father of India.”

Social Media Backlash

The statement sparked an immediate backlash, with many accusing the singer of disrespecting Gandhi’s legacy. Social media platforms were flooded with criticism, with users calling his comments irresponsible and insensitive.

Abhijeet’s Legacy in Bollywood

Abhijeet Bhattacharya is celebrated for his melodious hits from the 1990s, including “Wada Raha Sanam”, “Khud Ko Kya Samajhti Hai”, and “Kya Khabar Thi Jaana”. His voice became synonymous with Shah Rukh Khan in several blockbuster films, earning him widespread fame.

He began his career under the mentorship of R.D. Burman, who gave him his first break in a Bengali film alongside Asha Bhosle. Over the years, Abhijeet lent his voice to leading stars like Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan, and Ajay Devgn.

Public Reaction and Implications

While Abhijeet’s comments have reignited discussions about Gandhi’s role in history, many have condemned the comparison with R.D. Burman as unwarranted and disrespectful. Critics argue that Gandhi’s contribution to India’s independence and his global legacy as a symbol of peace and non-violence remain unparalleled.

The Larger Debate

This controversy underscores the sensitivity surrounding national icons like Mahatma Gandhi. It also raises questions about the responsibilities of public figures when making statements on historical and cultural legacies. As the debate continues to rage online, Abhijeet has yet to respond to the widespread criticism or clarify his remarks.
