Syrian Rebels Take Control of Damascus, Assad Likely in Moscow, Russian MFA monitoring situation closely

Syria

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed deep concern over the unfolding events in Syria, following Bashar al-Assad's decision to step down as president and leave the country after over five decades of his family's rule. Russia clarified that it was not involved in negotiations leading to Assad’s resignation but called for a peaceful resolution to Syria’s governance crisis.

Assad Granted Asylum in Russia

According to Russian state media, Assad and his family arrived in Moscow, where they have been granted asylum on humanitarian grounds. Reports from Kremlin sources confirmed that Assad fled Damascus on a Syrian Air flight, which made an abrupt route change before disappearing from radar, fueling speculation about its safety.

Assad’s departure occurred just hours after Islamist-led rebels, primarily the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, took control of Damascus in a swift offensive, marking a significant turning point in Syria’s ongoing conflict.

Russia’s Position

In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry urged all parties in Syria to: Renounce violence and pursue a political solution in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254. Respect the diverse ethnic and religious fabric of Syrian society. Russia reaffirmed its commitment to supporting an inclusive political process and emphasized the importance of UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen’s initiative for intra-Syrian talks in Geneva.

Security of Russian Citizens and Bases

Russia has heightened security measures at its military bases in Syria, which are on high alert, although there is no immediate threat to their safety. The Kremlin stressed its efforts to protect Russian nationals in the region.

Rebels Declare a New Era

HTS, previously linked to Al-Qaeda, declared the end of Assad’s rule as the beginning of a "new era for Syria." In a symbolic gesture, Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, the leader of HTS, visited Damascus’s Umayyad Mosque, where he was greeted by supporters. The group, which has sought to distance itself from its extremist origins, stated, "After 50 years of oppression under Baath rule, and 13 years of crimes and tyranny, we announce the start of a new era for Syria."

A Nation at a Crossroads

Assad’s ouster marks a dramatic shift in the Syrian conflict, with hopes for a peaceful transition tempered by uncertainties over the country’s future governance. Russia’s call for diplomacy and inclusivity underscores the challenges ahead in stabilizing Syria and addressing the needs of its diverse population.
