Saif Ali Khan's ₹35 Lakh Mediclaim Approval Sparks Debate, Doctor Questions Insurance Policies

Saif Ali Khan

Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan’s ₹35.95 lakh health insurance claim, approved for his treatment at Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital, has ignited a heated debate on social media.

A Mumbai-based cardiac surgeon, Dr. Prashant Mishra, has raised questions about the fairness of the insurance company’s decision, highlighting discrepancies in claim approvals between high-profile clients and average policyholders.

Dr. Mishra voiced his concerns on X (formerly Twitter), arguing that the substantial amount approved for Saif would be unattainable for middle-class individuals. He claimed that most middle-class policyholders face significant challenges in securing claims exceeding ₹5 lakh, even for critical treatments. “This kind of treatment cost is often capped at ₹5 lakh for small hospitals and ordinary people by companies like Niva Bupa. Yet, five-star hospitals charge exorbitant fees, and insurance companies approve them, leading to rising premiums that burden the middle class,” Dr. Mishra stated in his post.

The debate comes in the wake of Saif’s hospitalization following an attack at his residence on January 16, which left him with six injuries. He was admitted to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

Saif had initially sought ₹35.95 lakh from his insurance provider, out of which ₹25 lakh was approved upfront for initial treatment, with the remaining amount settled post-surgery as per policy terms. Dr. Mishra’s comments shed light on the broader issue of inequality in the health insurance system, where high-profile individuals seemingly receive preferential treatment.

Many on social media echoed his concerns, calling for reforms to ensure fair treatment for all policyholders. As discussions continue, the spotlight remains on how insurance companies handle claims and the potential need for stricter regulations to bridge the gap between elite and ordinary clients.
