Devendra Fadnavis to Be Maharashtra’s Next Chief Minister: A Look at His Journey

Devendra Fadnavis

BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis has been chosen as the next Chief Minister of Maharashtra after a unanimous decision during a BJP legislative party meeting in Mumbai. This marks his third term in the state’s top post, following his first tenure from 2014 to 2019 and a brief stint in 2019.

From Humble Beginnings to Political Prominence

Born on July 22, 1970, in Nagpur to a middle-class Maharashtrian family, Fadnavis's early life was shaped by his father, Gangadharrao Fadnavis, a Jan Sangh leader and member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council. During the Emergency, Gangadharrao was imprisoned for participating in anti-government protests, leaving a lasting impression on young Devendra.

After losing his father to cancer at the age of 16, Fadnavis dreamed of establishing affordable cancer treatment facilities. This dream materialized with the creation of the National Cancer Institute in Nagpur. Fadnavis completed his LLB from Ambedkar College of Law in Nagpur and later earned a management diploma in project management from DSE Berlin. Known for his intellectual rigor, he is a voracious reader of finance, politics, and economics. His political journey began in earnest when he became Nagpur’s youngest mayor at the age of 27, cementing his position as a rising star in Maharashtra politics.

A Political Leader with Deep Roots

Fadnavis’s political career took off when he was elected as an MLA from Nagpur in 1999. Since then, he has won six consecutive terms from the Nagpur South West constituency, reflecting his enduring popularity. His tenure as Chief Minister from 2014 to 2019 was marked by several landmark achievements:

Maratha Reservation: Fadnavis navigated one of the state’s most sensitive issues with tact. Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg: A transformative infrastructure project under his leadership.

Jal Yukt Shivar Abhiyan: A groundbreaking initiative in water conservation and management.

Fadnavis is also credited with exposing the irrigation scam, reinforcing his reputation as a leader committed to fighting corruption.

Leadership Style and Public Appeal

Known for his approachable demeanor and strategic thinking, Fadnavis’s leadership style has resonated across communities. His ability to balance the demands of governance and grassroots politics earned him widespread respect. During the 2024 elections, Fadnavis leveraged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s slogan, “Ek hain toh safe hain”, to connect with voters, particularly in the backdrop of communal and political tensions.

His campaigns emphasized unity and development, ensuring a resounding victory for the Mahayuti alliance, which secured 230 of the 288 Assembly seats.

Family and Personal Life

Fadnavis is married to Amruta Ranade, a banker and singer. The couple has a daughter, Divija, who, despite her young age, is actively involved in raising awareness about social issues such as global warming. His family background reflects a mix of traditional values and modern aspirations.

Challenges and the Road Ahead

As Maharashtra’s next Chief Minister, Fadnavis faces challenges such as balancing coalition dynamics within the Mahayuti alliance and addressing issues like urban development, rural distress, and employment. His collaborative approach, as seen in previous tenures, will be critical in steering the state forward.

A Legacy of Progress

From being the youngest mayor of Nagpur to becoming one of Maharashtra’s most influential leaders, Devendra Fadnavis’s journey is a testament to his resilience and vision. His focus on infrastructure, governance, and social reform has positioned him as a transformative leader in Indian politics. As he takes oath as Chief Minister once again, Maharashtra anticipates a period of renewed growth and stability under his leadership.
