Prime Minister Recovers After Prostate Surgery, Remains in Hospital for Observation

Prime Minister

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remained in a Jerusalem hospital overnight Monday-Tuesday following a successful prostate surgery conducted on Sunday evening. Doctors at Hadassah Hospital, where the procedure took place, indicated that Netanyahu might stay under observation for several days.

Surgery and Recovery

The surgery was necessitated by a benign enlargement of the prostate that had caused a urinary tract infection. Prof. Ofer Gofrit, head of Hadassah’s urology department, confirmed that the procedure went as planned, with no indication of malignancy or cancer.

Netanyahu, 75, has been recovering in a fortified underground ward due to security concerns linked to the ongoing war. He was under full anesthesia during the surgery, and doctors have stated his recovery is proceeding smoothly.

Sara Netanyahu’s Absence Due to COVID-19

Netanyahu’s wife, Sara, did not return to Israel from Miami to accompany him during his surgery, as she is currently battling COVID-19. Sources reported that she is experiencing severe symptoms, including high fever and difficulty breathing.

She is expected to return to Israel after her recovery, which could take several days.

Leadership Amid Crises

Netanyahu’s health issues come at a time when he is managing significant national crises, including the war in Gaza and his ongoing corruption trial.

Despite these challenges, the prime minister has sought to project an image of vitality, often highlighting his rigorous schedule and dedication to his role. Due to his hospitalization, Netanyahu's legal team successfully petitioned to postpone three days of testimony in his corruption trial. His lawyer cited the necessity of sedation and the extended recovery period as reasons for the delay.

Age and Leadership Scrutiny

At 75, Netanyahu joins a list of older global leaders, including U.S. President Joe Biden (82) and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (79), whose health and age have been under public scrutiny.

As Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, with a cumulative 17 years in power, Netanyahu’s demanding workload has raised questions about the toll on his health. The prime minister’s office has assured the public that Netanyahu is on the path to recovery, continuing to monitor his progress while balancing the nation’s pressing issues.
