YouTuber Mithilesh Backpacker Confronts Harasser After Russian Wife Faces Eve-Teasing in Udaipur

Udaipur, Rajasthan – Popular YouTuber Mithilesh Backpacker shared a troubling incident where his Russian wife, Lisa, was subjected to derogatory remarks while the couple and their two-year-old son were visiting Udaipur's City Palace.
The incident, captured in a video that has since gone viral, highlights ongoing concerns about the safety of women, particularly foreign tourists, in India.
The Incident
While recording a vlog at City Palace, a man in the vicinity made a distasteful comment, “6,000 INR,” a phrase that has taken on a derogatory meaning regarding Russian women due to inappropriate jokes popularized in Indian media.
Mithilesh immediately confronted the individual, capturing the exchange on video. “6,000 INR kisko bolta, merko samajhta nahi kya? (Don’t I understand whom you’re addressing with this 6,000?)” Mithilesh can be heard saying in the footage.
He further rebuked the harasser, stating, “Meri wife Russian hai toh tu ulta seedha comment dega? (Just because my wife is Russian, you think you can make such comments?)”
Mithilesh revealed that the group of men had been following them and making inappropriate remarks even before the comment that triggered his reaction.
He added that when palace security was informed, they discouraged him from involving the police.
Outrage and Criticism
In his YouTube video, Mithilesh expressed his disappointment and anger over the incident. “How can people behave this way? My wife came to India to experience its beauty and culture, and instead, she faced harassment. I wanted to promote Indian tourism as safe and welcoming, but incidents like these are shocking and shameful,” he said.
Mithilesh also criticized the broader safety issues for women in India, pointing out that such incidents tarnish the country's image and discourage tourists.
A Recurring Problem
This is not the first instance of harassment faced by foreign women in India. In 2022, a South Korean woman was harassed in Mumbai during a livestream, and in 2024, a Spanish woman was gang-raped in Jharkhand.
These incidents have raised questions about the country’s ability to ensure the safety of women, both local and foreign.
