Nomination Process in Dhamtari Makes News: Candidate Uses Bag of Coins to Buy Form

In an unusual turn of events, a candidate in Dhamtari for the upcoming urban local body elections arrived at the nomination office with a bag full of coins to pay for his nomination form.
This unique incident took place after the announcement of election dates, which has sparked a surge of activity among political parties. So far, 56 nomination forms for the position of councillor have been sold, with only one form submitted.
Eight nomination forms for the mayoral position have also been purchased. The final date for submitting nominations is January 28.
The candidate in question is Ashish Ratre, who is contesting both the councillor and mayoral positions from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Ratre arrived with a bag filled with coins to pay the nomination fee. According to him, the funds were collected by his party workers, and he had brought the coins to fulfill the required fee.
"I am contesting the mayoral election under the banner of the Bahujan Samaj Party. I have also taken a form for the female candidate from the Dak Bungalow ward. I am using the hard-earned money of my party workers, which includes coins of one, two, five, and ten rupees. There are 3,500 rupees in coins, and the rest is in notes," said Ashish Ratre, the candidate.
Despite most candidates opting for notes to pay their fees, Ratre defended the use of coins, stating that coins are still legal tender and widely accepted. However, the election office staff found it a bit challenging to handle, count, and verify the coins.
Nevertheless, the officials accepted them as part of their duty. "It's part of our job. If someone brings money in coin form, we will definitely accept it. Coins are legal tender, and there's no rule saying we can't take them. It may take a little more time, but it’s a rare situation, so there’s no issue," said Indira Singh, the Returning Officer.
The incident, although rare, highlights the continuing circulation of coins as an acceptable form of payment, even in modern-day transactions like election nominations.
