Indore witnesses 'Hingot War', part of old tradition, after Deepawali

Participants in Indore’s Hingot War hurl fiery "hingots" at each other, lighting up the night sky in an annual tradition of bravery and spectacle in Depalpur, Madhya Pradesh, held the day after Diwali.

Deepawali

People in Madhya Pradesh's Indore participate in the Hingot war, a traditional fireball battle in which two groups hurled burning 'Hingots' at each other Hingot is a forest fruit that is derived from a tree and emptied from the inside. It is then filled with gunpowder and left to dry for 8-10 days. In the event, the Hingot is tied to a wooden stick and lit on fire, then thrown towards the opponents.

Indore's Depalpur witnessed its age-old tradition of "Hingot War," where two teams hurled fireballs at each other, creating a breathtaking spectacle in the night sky. This unique event, held annually a day after Diwali, saw participants from the villages of Gautampura and Runji come together to display their combat skills in this traditional battle. Reports indicate that a few people were injured during the event.

The fierce tradition takes place between the "Kalangi" and "Turra" teams in Gautampura, Depalpur. The ritual began with prayers at the Devanarayan temple, after which participants upheld the centuries-old custom by throwing ignited hingots at each other. The local administration arranged for safety measures, with ambulances on standby and security to ensure the well-being of spectators.

Large crowds gathered to witness the thrilling Hingot War, cheering for both sides. As per tradition, the battle had no winner or loser and ended as darkness fell. The hingots used in this event are crafted well in advance; they are made from a hard-shelled fruit, similar to a coconut, which is hollowed out, sun-dried, and filled with gunpowder. A cotton wick is ignited at the top, and a wooden handle is attached for throwing, making it resemble a fiery rocket when launched.

DSP Rural, Umakant Chaudhary says, "...This tradition has been there for long. Proper arrangements were made as there is a chance of injury during this. The Hingot war has peacefully ended. A few people, 10-12, have sustained minor injuries and they have been sent to hospital..."

The Hingot War remains a deeply cherished cultural event for the local communities, who begin preparations well in advance, looking forward to this dramatic and exhilarating spectacle.
