Narayanpur: Intense Encounter Between Naxals and Security Forces in Abujhmad Forests
A fierce encounter between security forces and Naxal insurgents is underway in the dense forests of Abujhmad, situated along the Maharashtra border in Kanker and Narayanpur districts of Chhattisgarh. As of now, five Naxals have been confirmed dead, and large quantities of arms have been seized. The ongoing operation involves joint forces from DRG, STF, and BSF.
Details of the Encounter
The operation began early in the morning on November 16, 2024, when intelligence reports indicated the presence of Naxals in the North Abujhmad region. A combined police force, consisting of DRG, STF, and BSF, was deployed for a search operation. During the operation, security forces came under attack from Naxals, triggering a violent exchange of gunfire. The firefight, which started around 8 AM, has continued intermittently throughout the day.
Casualties and Injuries
At least five Naxals have been killed, and two soldiers have been injured during the encounter. Their conditions are stable, and they are being airlifted to Raipur for further medical treatment. The Mi-17 helicopter was dispatched to evacuate the injured personnel, although the dense forest terrain has made landing operations challenging.
Search and Recovery Efforts
Security forces have recovered a significant number of weapons from the Naxals, with the search operation still ongoing. The area where the clash is taking place—Tekameta and Kakhur—has been a hotspot for Naxal activity. The security personnel are conducting thorough searches to ensure that no Naxals remain hidden in the area.
Operational Challenges and Reinforcements
Kanker Superintendent of Police, I.K. Elisela, confirmed the ongoing encounter but mentioned that due to the dense forest, direct communication with the forces has been difficult. Despite this, efforts to neutralize the Naxals continue. The operation is being closely monitored by Bastar IG Sundarraj P., who has been in contact with the field officers.
Ongoing Operations and Broader Goals
The encounter in Abujhmad is part of the state’s larger strategy to combat Naxal insurgency, with the government aiming to eradicate Naxalism from Chhattisgarh by 2026. The security forces are committed to intensifying their operations in the region, and the current operation is seen as a crucial step toward achieving this goal.
