Three Warships Join Indian Navy: PM Modi Commissions INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vagsheer


Mumbai: In a historic ceremony at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned three advanced warships—INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vagsheer—into the Indian Navy on January 15.
Marking Indian Army Day, these state-of-the-art vessels were dedicated to the nation, underscoring India's growing maritime strength and self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
A First-of-Its-Kind Ceremony
This event was unique as it marked the simultaneous commissioning of a destroyer (INS Surat), a stealth frigate (INS Nilgiri), and a submarine (INS Vagsheer) in a single ceremony. Addressing the gathering, PM Modi highlighted the significance of this achievement, calling it a milestone for the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and a testament to India’s capabilities in indigenous defense production.
Key Highlights of the Ceremony
INS Surat: A destroyer symbolizing Gujarat’s historic maritime legacy and its trade connections with West Asia.
INS Nilgiri: A stealth frigate dedicated to the maritime power of the Chola dynasty, reflecting India’s ancient naval dominance.
INS Vagsheer: The sixth and final submarine in the P-75 class, designed to revolutionize India's underwater security capabilities.
PM Modi emphasized that these warships, being entirely Made in India, represent a significant leap in India’s quest for self-reliance in the defense sector.
India’s Maritime Aspirations
PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to an open, secure, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. He stated, “India works with the spirit of development, not expansionism, and is dedicated to ensuring Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR).”
The Prime Minister also invoked the naval vision of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, crediting him with laying the foundation of India's maritime power. He noted that the commissioning of these modern warships on Shivaji’s land is a significant step toward strengthening India’s 21st-century naval capabilities.

The addition of INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vagsheer is expected to enhance India’s maritime strength significantly. PM Modi declared this commissioning a historic day for the Indian Navy and reiterated India's intent to emerge as a global leader in the defense sector. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Navy Chief Admiral R. Hari Kumar, who were present at the event, echoed the Prime Minister’s sentiments.
