'One Nation, One Subscription'

New Delhi: The central government is set to launch the "One Nation, One Subscription" initiative on January 1, 2025, offering India's 1.8 crore students and researchers free and easy access to the world’s top research journals.

The initiative aims to make high-quality research more accessible to a broader range of students and researchers across the country.

Access to 13,400 Journals for All Institutions

Under the first phase of the initiative, over 13,400 international journals will be made available across various disciplines such as science, technology, engineering, medicine, mathematics, management, social sciences, and humanities.

These journals include publications from leading publishers like Elsevier, Springer Nature, and Wiley. This program will benefit 6,380 institutions, including 451 state universities, 4,864 colleges, and 172 national institutions like IITs and NITs.

Previously, institutions were limited to subscribing only to journals relevant to their specific fields. According to Abhay Karadikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, the initiative will begin on January 1 and will be available for three years.

Expanding Access in the Next Phase

In the second phase, the government plans to extend the initiative to private educational institutions through a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

Principal Scientific Adviser Dr. A.K. Sood emphasized that "One Nation, One Subscription" will empower Indian researchers and students by providing them with access to high-quality global research, propelling India to new heights in education and research.
