Biden Extends Deportation Relief to 900,000 Immigrants Before Trump Takes Office

The Biden administration has extended deportation relief for 900,000 immigrants from Venezuela, El Salvador, Ukraine, and Sudan under the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program, a move that temporarily halts President-elect Donald Trump's plans to end these protections.

On Friday, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that it would extend TPS enrollment for these countries, offering immigrants an additional 18-month reprieve from deportation, along with continued access to work permits.

This extension ensures that the immigrants affected will be able to stay in the U.S. while preventing any immediate attempts by Trump to end their protection.

Since taking office in 2021, President Biden has significantly expanded TPS eligibility, increasing the number of immigrants covered under the program. TPS is granted to individuals whose home countries have experienced natural disasters, armed conflicts, or other extraordinary conditions.

As a result, over 1 million people from 17 countries are now eligible for the program. During his previous term, President Trump sought to end most TPS protections but was blocked by U.S. courts.

As he returns to the White House on January 20, Trump has promised a crackdown on immigration, including an effort to terminate TPS for many groups.

While the Biden administration's extension is seen as a victory for those affected, it fell short of the broader demands from some activists and Democrats who called for TPS to be granted to more recent immigrants and individuals from additional nations.

Todd Schulte, president of an advocacy group, applauded the decision but urged Biden to expand TPS to include countries like Nicaragua. Among the largest groups benefiting from the extension are the 600,000 Venezuelans currently eligible for TPS.

The Biden administration initially granted TPS to Venezuelans in 2021, citing the country’s political and economic instability under President Nicolás Maduro, who began his third term on Friday. While this extension provides crucial relief, discussions on expanding TPS to other nations remain ongoing.
