Stone Pelting Erupts During Mosque Survey in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal

Stone Pelting

Tensions flared in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, as an incident of stone pelting occurred when a survey team arrived at the Shahi Jama Masjid to conduct an official survey. The police had to resort to using tear gas to bring the situation under control.

The survey followed a petition filed by senior advocate Vishnu Shanker Jain in the local court of the civil judge at Sambhal, claiming that the mosque was originally a Hari Har temple. As part of the court's directive, a similar survey had been conducted on November 19, which involved the presence of local police and members of the mosque’s management committee.

The latest survey attempt, carried out on Sunday morning, was met with resistance as stone pelting erupted near the mosque premises. The advocate commissioner, appointed by the court, had initiated the survey earlier this month following the petition. The incident disrupted the process and escalated tensions in the area.

To control the unrest, the police used tear gas, ensuring the safety of the survey team and restoring order in the area. Authorities have heightened security around the site to prevent further clashes.

The situation in Sambhal remains tense but under control, with law enforcement maintaining a strong presence to monitor any potential flare-ups. The survey and the associated claims have drawn significant attention, highlighting the delicate nature of religious and historical site disputes in the region.

The claim that the Shahi Jama Masjid was originally a temple has sparked controversy, adding to the growing number of similar disputes across the country. Local authorities and community leaders have urged calm while the legal process unfolds.
