In a major move that is set to make politics erupt, the central government has lifted the ban on government employees participating in Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activities, a restriction that was originally imposed in November 1966 during Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's tenure. The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions issued the order, as shared by BJP IT Cell Chief Amit Malviya on X, stating that the "unconstitutional" ban imposed 58 years ago has now been revoked by the Modi government.

Several state governments, including Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, had already removed similar restrictions on government employees associating with the RSS.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also posted on X, sharing a photo of an order dated July 9 issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). This order referenced earlier memoranda from November 30, 1966, July 25, 1970, and October 28, 1980, indicating that these instructions had been reviewed and the mention of “Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh (R.S.S.S)” was removed from the directives.

The authenticity of the order posted by Congress leaders could not be immediately verified. However, Amit Malviya also shared the screenshot of the order, confirming that the Modi government had withdrawn the 58-year-old directive
