Container vehicle rams Nehru Nagar underbridge, damages structure quite a bit
underbridge
Late last night, a speeding container vehicle collided with the Nehru Nagar railway underbridge, causing the entire structure to collapse. The collision severely damaged the underbridge's height gauge, resulting in the closure of both sides of the underbridge. The incident occurred at 1:30 AM, a time when traffic through the underbridge is minimal; otherwise, significant casualties could have occurred.
The container vehicle was transporting plywood from Raipur to Hyderabad. Instead of following the National Highway, the driver turned the vehicle towards the railway underbridge leading to Bhilai Township from Nehru Nagar Chowk. It is believed that the driver swerved to avoid hitting a stray animal at the chowk, causing the high-speed container to veer towards the underbridge and crash into the height gauge.
The impact uprooted the strong base pole of the height gauge and damaged the upper seat. Upon receiving information about the incident, the Supela police station and traffic police team arrived at the scene. Traffic police used a crane to remove the container vehicle and barricaded both sides of the underbridge to stop traffic. People traveling between Nehru Nagar and Bhilai Township are advised to use the overbridge route.
Traffic DSP Satish Thakur stated that there were no casualties in the incident. The container was removed using a crane and handed over to the Supela police station.
