Local administration rushed a large team of police personnel outside the hospital shortly after Ansari was taken there and prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) have been imposed across Uttar Pradesh following his death.

“Mukhtar said that he was given a poisonous substance in his food in jail. This happened for the second time. He was given poison around 40 days ago as well. And, recently, on March 19 or March 22, he was again given this (poison) due to which his condition is bad,” Afzal Ansari had been quoted as saying by PTI.

Ansari had 61 criminal cases against him, of which 15 were on murder charges.

On the death of Gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari after suffering a cardiac arrest, Umar Ansari, son of Mukhtar Ansari says, “I was not told anything from the administration side, I came to know about it through the media… But now the whole nation knows everything… Two days ago I came to meet him, but I was not allowed… We said earlier also and even today we will say the same about the allegation of giving slow poison. On March 19, he was poisoned in the dinner. We will move to the judiciary, we have full faith in it…”

Former UP DGP OP Singh says, “Various kinds of rumours are being spread in the state, and a high alert has been issued. Police and administration are absolutely alert, especially in areas like Ghazipur, Mau, Azamgarh, Jaunpur, and Varanasi. Police are patrolling the streets and telling people to maintain peace and not spread rumours… When Mukhtar Ansari was lodged in Punjab jail, he had submitted many such applications on medical grounds so that he would not have to appear in UP courts.

He has not always been healthy and has been ill for long. Accusing that he was being poisoned is absolutely a baseless allegation. The situation will become absolutely clear after a postmortem is done… Mukhtar Ansari was a criminal, a don, and a mafia, and his death should not be thought of extensively…”.
