Woman tries jumping into sea, cab driver, police intervene, watch here
A 57-year-old woman was dramatically rescued from the brink of falling into the sea from the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Trans Harbour Link bridge (Atal Setu) in Nhava Sheva on Friday, thanks to the quick actions of a cab driver and police officers. The incident, captured on CCTV and widely shared on social media, shows the cab driver grabbing the woman just as she attempted to jump off the bridge.
The woman, who is from Mulund, had asked 31-year-old cab driver Sanjay Yadav to stop the vehicle on the bridge, claiming she needed to immerse religious photos into the sea. The incident occurred around 7 PM, according to the police. They were alerted when the car stopped, and the woman was seen crossing the bridge's railing.
Upon seeing the police arrive, the woman reportedly tried to leap into the sea but was prevented by the quick-thinking cab driver, who managed to grab her by the hair. Four police constables then jumped over the railing to help pull her back to safety. She was subsequently taken to a nearby police station in Navi Mumbai, where her family was contacted. According to Anjum Bagwan, a senior inspector at the Nhava Sheva police station, the family stated that the woman has been struggling with mental health issues.
The Mumbai Police Commissioner, Vivek Phansalkar, praised the prompt response of the officials involved, including Lalit Shirsat, Kiran Mahtre, Yash Sonawane, and Mayur Patil, who played crucial roles in the rescue. In a post on X, he commended their efforts in saving the woman's life.
