Woman police officer acts as tourist, calls for help, to assess women's safety
In a remarkable initiative, ACP Sukanya Sharma of Agra donned civilian attire to assess women's safety in the city. This incident took place in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, where she disguised herself as a tourist to evaluate police efficiency and security measures for women.
During her late-night outing, ACP Sharma traveled alone in an auto-rickshaw to test the emergency response system. She called the emergency number 112, expressing her concerns about feeling unsafe on a deserted road and requested police assistance. The helpline operator advised her to stay in a safe location and provide her whereabouts.Shortly after, a women's patrol team contacted her to inform that they were on their way. Identifying herself as an ACP, she explained that she was conducting a test of the emergency response system. Following this, she continued her journey in the auto-rickshaw, discussing safety issues with the driver without revealing her identity.The driver mentioned that police patrols were present in the area, prompting him to drive more cautiously. After safely reaching her destination, the driver dropped her off as instructed.This undercover operation has garnered praise from activists like Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj, highlighting the importance of ensuring women's safety in Agra. ACP Sukanya Sharma's efforts aim to enhance public confidence in police responsiveness and effectiveness in safeguarding women.During her inspection, ACP Sharma made calls to the control room and engaged with the auto-rickshaw driver about the challenges women face while traveling at night. She noted that under police commissioner J. Ravindra Goud's directives, efforts are underway to designate certain areas as "women-safe zones," equipped with CCTV surveillance.The initiative underscores a commitment to improving women's safety in Agra, allowing them to seek police assistance when needed, especially during late hours.
