Woman apprehended at airport, with several crores worth gold

A woman was arrested at Tiruchirappalli Airport in Tamil Nadu by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU). The authorities seized 2,291 grams of gold from her, valued at several crore rupees. The gold recovered from the woman includes both 24-carat and 22-carat purity levels. The woman is accused of attempting to smuggle gold without declaring it to customs.

According to customs officials, the AIU team at Tiruchirappalli Airport apprehended the woman on Tuesday. The seized gold, worth approximately ₹1.53 crore, was found in her possession. A spokesperson from Tiruchirappalli Customs stated, "On August 13, AIU officers at the airport seized 2,291 grams of gold with 24-carat and 22-carat purity, valued at around ₹1.53 crore. The gold was seized from a female passenger who was attempting to smuggle it without declaring it to customs in order to evade customs fees."

Officials added that the verification of her passport revealed she was not authorized to import gold. The passenger has been arrested and sent to judicial custody, and further investigation is ongoing. It was noted that the passenger had arrived from Kuala Lumpur late on the night of August 12.
