Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, a stalwart of Indian politics and the architect of the country’s economic reforms, passed away at the age of 92. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, moved by Dr. Singh’s dedication, praised his exemplary commitment. “He knew the government would win, yet he came to Parliament in a wheelchair and voted. He added, “This is an inspiring example of how conscious an MP should be about their duties. Today, I pray for his long life and hope he continues to guide us.”

Following Dr. Singh’s passing, PM Modi expressed his condolences on X (formerly Twitter), calling him “one of India’s most distinguished leaders.” Reflecting on their professional interactions, PM Modi said, “When Dr. Manmohan Singh ji was Prime Minister and I was Chief Minister of Gujarat, we regularly communicated on governance issues. His wisdom and modesty were always evident.”

The Prime Minister further wrote, “Rising from humble beginnings, Dr. Singh became a celebrated economist and served in various key roles, including Finance Minister. His pragmatic interventions in Parliament and contributions to economic policy will be remembered for generations. Om Shanti.”

Manmohan Singh’s Legacy

Dr. Manmohan Singh’s career was marked by landmark contributions to India’s economic and political landscape. He served as Prime Minister for a decade (2004-2014) under the Congress-led UPA government and as Finance Minister in the PV Narasimha Rao government from 1991 to 1996.

His tenure as Finance Minister saw the implementation of sweeping economic reforms that steered India out of a severe financial crisis and laid the foundation for its growth as a global economic powerhouse.
