Water tariff hike unavoidable, says Deputy Chief Minister, cites financial strain

Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar addresses the need for a water tariff hike in Bengaluru, citing financial difficulties faced by the BWSSB

Chief Minister

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister, DK Shivakumar, announced that a water tariff hike in Bengaluru is unavoidable due to the financial strain on the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). Speaking at the launch of the 'Cauvery water at your doorstep' campaign, Shivakumar noted that the water tariff in the city has not increased in the past 12-13 years, leading to severe financial difficulties for the BWSSB.

He emphasized that without this increase, the board may struggle to sustain its operations, including paying employees and covering essential costs like electricity bills. Shivakumar made it clear that the hike will proceed despite any opposition, as the government must invest in expanding and maintaining the water distribution network to meet the growing demands of Bengaluru’s population.

"We are still determining the exact amount and the segments to which the hike will apply," he said, stressing that the primary goal is to ensure uninterrupted water supply across the city.
