In a massive crackdown in the Pakistan-led Visakhapatnam espionage case, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday (28th August) searched multiple locations in seven states across India.

Extensive searches were conducted at 16 locations in Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Haryana in the case related to leakage of classified defence information through a Pakistani ISI espionage racket, says NIA.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has conducted extensive searches across seven Indian states, including Telangana, as part of a significant crackdown on the Pakistan-led Visakhapatnam espionage case. The operation spanned 16 locations in Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Haryana, targeting individuals linked to the leakage of classified defense information through a Pakistani ISI espionage network. According to the NIA, the raids were focused on suspects who had received funds from Pakistan to carry out espionage activities in India. During these searches, the NIA seized 22 mobile phones and a range of sensitive documents. The investigation, which the NIA took over in July 2023 from the Counter Intelligence Cell in Andhra Pradesh, originally began in January 2021. This case revolves around the leakage of critical information concerning the Indian Navy, part of an anti-India conspiracy orchestrated from across the border. On July 19, 2023, the NIA filed a charge sheet against two accused, including a Pakistani national, Meer Balaj Khan, who remains at large. The investigation revealed that Khan, along with another arrested individual, Akash Solanki, was deeply involved in the espionage network. Further developments saw the NIA filing a supplementary charge sheet on November 6, 2023, against two more individuals, Manmohan Surendra Panda, who has been arrested, and Alven, a Pakistani intelligence operative who is absconding. In May 2024, the NIA filed a second supplementary charge sheet against Amaan Salim Shaikh, who conspired with Pakistani intelligence operatives. The investigation into this high-profile espionage case is ongoing.
