Virat Kohli Fined 20% of Match Fee for Unsportsmanlike Conduct: Is a Ban Looming for Sydney Test?

Virat Kohli

Melbourne, Australia – Virat Kohli has been fined 20% of his match fee following an unsportsmanlike incident on Day 1 of the fourth India vs Australia Test in Melbourne.

The incident involved Kohli in a heated exchange with 19-year-old Australian debutant Sam Konstas, and it has raised concerns about potential disciplinary action, including a possible ban for the Sydney Test.

The Incident

The exchange took place after the tenth over when Kohli, while switching sides, shoulder-bumped Konstas. The confrontation quickly escalated, with both players engaging in verbal sparring. The situation required intervention from Usman Khawaja and the on-field umpire to separate the two.

The incident, which occurred during Australia’s innings after they won the toss, went viral on social media, with fans and commentators criticizing Kohli for his aggression, calling it "unnecessary."

Reactions from Experts

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who was commentating for Channel 7, expressed his belief that Kohli was at fault, stating, “Virat walked one whole pitch over to his right and instigated that confrontation. No doubt in my mind whatsoever. The umpires and the referee will have a good look at that.” Ponting also pointed out that fielders should avoid crowding near the batsman during this stage of play.

Ravi Shastri, former India player and coach, also condemned Kohli’s actions, calling them “absolutely unnecessary” during an interview with SEN, adding that the match referee would likely review the incident closely.

The ICC Code of Conduct

According to the ICC Code of Conduct, any form of inappropriate physical contact is prohibited, including deliberate, reckless, or negligent actions such as walking or running into another player or umpire. This incident could potentially be classified as a Level Two offence, which carries three or four demerit points. If Kohli or Konstas receives four demerit points, either player could face a suspension, meaning they could miss the Sydney Test scheduled for January 3.

A Level One offence, however, would result in a fine, with no suspension. As it stands, the incident is likely to be reviewed by match referee Andy Pycroft, and the outcome will depend on his assessment of the situation.

Sam Konstas Weighs In

After his dismissal, Sam Konstas briefly addressed the incident, stating, “I think the emotions got to both of us. I didn’t quite realize, I was doing my gloves and a tap on my shoulder but it happens in cricket.” Konstas downplayed the confrontation, indicating that it was a momentary lapse in emotions. As the review continues, all eyes will be on match referee Pycroft’s decision, with the potential for more consequences depending on the classification of the offence.
