Uttar Pradesh bans sale of halal certified goods, with immediate effect

In a major decision that is sure to trigger political reactions, the Uttar Pradesh Food Commissioner has banned production, stocking and distribution of all halal branded edible items in the state.

“Strict legal measures will be implemented against any individual or firm engaged in the production, storage, distribution, buying and selling of halal-certified medicines, medical devices and cosmetics within the state of Uttar Pradesh, ” an official order said.

With this, the government in Uttar Pradesh has gone ahead and banned labeling halal on different food items or eatables. This includes dairy or bakery items but also edible oils.

The order states that halal certification creates confusion among the consumers and is against the principles of the state government law on edible items quality surety.
