US Supreme Court Approves Extradition of Mumbai Attack Accused Tahawwur Rana to India

Mumbai Attack Accused

In the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case, Mumbai attack accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana has been denied a petition of writ of certiorari. The writ had been filed in November 2024 against an earlier order of a lower court that had ruled in favour of his extradition to India. A writ of certiorari is a legal document that allows a higher court to review a case from a lower court.

The US Supreme Court has approved the extradition of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a Pakistani-origin Canadian citizen, to India. This decision is being hailed as a significant victory for India, which has long sought Rana’s extradition for his alleged involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks.

Rana is accused of conducting reconnaissance in Mumbai ahead of the attacks and is also alleged to have worked with Lashkar-e-Taiba and Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI. The extradition approval marks a crucial step in India’s efforts to bring those responsible for the horrific Mumbai attacks to justice.

The attacks, which left 166 people dead, including foreign nationals, remain one of the darkest chapters in India’s history. With this decision, Indian authorities are now closer to interrogating Rana and further uncovering the full extent of his involvement in planning and supporting the attacks.

On the US Supreme Court denying Tahawwur Hussain Rana's petition of writ of certiorari, Advocate Ujjwal Nikam says, "It's a great success for India because the Supreme Court of America has dismissed the review petition of Tahawwur Rana. I say it's a success for India because Tahawwur Rana and David Headley are the close links behind the terror attack of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. By extraditing Tahawwur Rana, India will get more information and evidence of the involvement of some of the Pakistani people, including the Pakistan security apparatus. David Headley has given such revelation and evidence in Mumbai court and also produced the email correspondence showing the links between Lashkar-e-Taiba and Pakistan ISI Army officers. I am very optimistic that the extradition of Tahawwur Rana will give more evidence about the involvement of some of the security apparatus of Pakistan."
