Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris faced off in their inaugural presidential debate on Tuesday night. The debate, hosted by ABC News and simulcast on NBC, began at 9 pm EST (6:30 am IST) and lasted about 90 minutes. The candidates aggressively debated a range of issues including the economy, abortion rights, the Israel-Gaza conflict, the Russia-Ukraine war, and immigration laws.

Trump criticized the Biden-Harris administration, labeling them as "the worst president and vice president in the history of our country." In contrast, Harris emphasized the common ground among Americans and her vision for a unified future, stating, "I do believe that the American people know we all have so much more in common than what separates us, and we can chart a new way forward."

Shortly after the debate, Taylor Swift endorsed Harris on Instagram, praising her as a “steady-handed, gifted leader” and advocating for leadership marked by calm rather than chaos. During the debate, Harris took Trump to task for his handling of employment, which she described as the worst since the Great Depression.

The debate was notably contentious, with Trump defending the Supreme Court's 2022 decision to remove constitutional protections for abortion, claiming it was supported by both parties—a point disputed by Harris and the moderator. Trump also made controversial claims about abortion and immigration, which were fact-checked during the debate.

Harris criticized Trump for his alleged mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic and his economic policies, while Trump defended his record, boasting about his administration's economic achievements. The debate highlighted sharp contrasts in their policies and approaches, setting the stage for the remaining months of the presidential race.
