Uproar in Lok Sabha Over TMC MP's Remarks on Minister Scindia: Apology Rejected

Scindia

The Lok Sabha witnessed intense drama on Wednesday after Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee made objectionable remarks against Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia during a discussion on amendments to the Disaster Management Act. The comments, which triggered a heated exchange between the Treasury and Opposition benches, were expunged by Speaker Om Birla.

Banerjee later apologised, but Scindia refused to accept the apology, citing personal attacks and disrespect to women.

The Incident

The controversy began when Banerjee accused the central government of non-cooperation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai defended the government, praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi for leading a unified response during the crisis. Scindia supported Rai, highlighting India’s role as a “Vishwa Bandhu” (global friend) during the pandemic.

In response, Banerjee made personal remarks against Scindia, leading to uproar in the House. Scindia strongly objected, stating:

"I am here because of the blessings of the people of India, my hard work, and dedication. I will not tolerate baseless and personal attacks on me or my family.Parliamentary matters should remain within parliamentary decorum."

Speaker Intervenes, Apology Offered

Speaker Om Birla underlined the need to avoid personal remarks and maintain decorum. Following the uproar, the House was adjourned. Upon reconvening, Banerjee issued an apology. However, Scindia remained firm, rejecting the apology and asserting:

"Any individual values their self-respect. Attack policies, not personal lives. I do not accept his apology for the personal attack on me and the women of India."

Demand for Action Against Banerjee The incident escalated as BJP women MPs, led by Andhra Pradesh lawmaker Daggubati Purandeswari, met Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. They demanded Banerjee’s suspension for the remainder of the Winter Session, accusing him of repeatedly making offensive remarks about women MPs.

Purandeswari stated, "This is not the first time Banerjee has made such remarks. It is unbecoming of a parliamentarian from a state led by a woman leader."

Reactions and Broader Implications

The verbal spat highlights growing tensions in parliamentary proceedings and the need for strict adherence to decorum. Scindia’s firm stance reflects the importance of maintaining respect and professionalism in discussions, even during heated debates.

The demand for Banerjee’s suspension indicates a push for stronger accountability for personal and offensive remarks within Parliament, underscoring the significance of upholding respect for all members and addressing gender sensitivity in the House.
