Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy strongly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Russia, labeling it a profound setback for international peace initiatives. Zelenskyy's reaction followed a tragic incident in Kyiv, where a Russian missile struck a children's hospital, resulting in the loss of 29 lives.

During his two-day trip, PM Modi held an informal meeting with President Vladimir Putin at his official residence outside Moscow. This visit marked Modi's first to Russia since the onset of its extensive invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Zelenskyy, who had previously met Modi at the G7 summit, expressed his dismay over the visit in a statement on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), saying, "It is a huge disappointment and a devastating blow to peace efforts to see the leader of the world’s largest democracy embrace the world’s most brutal criminal in Moscow on such a day."

Modi's visit to Russia has been viewed as a delicate balancing act, aiming to uphold longstanding bilateral ties while navigating the complexities of Western alliances amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Ukrainian president's criticism underscored the timing of Modi's diplomatic engagement, coinciding with a tragic escalation of violence that not only claimed numerous lives but also caused extensive damage to essential infrastructure, including schools and hospitals.

Zelenskyy's pointed remarks on social media highlighted the stark contrast between diplomatic engagements and the humanitarian crisis unfolding on Ukrainian soil, emphasizing the urgency for global leaders to align their actions with efforts towards achieving peace and stability in the region.
