Trump Proposes Relocating Gaza Palestinians to Egypt and Jordan, Drawing Sharp Criticism

Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested relocating Palestinians from Gaza to neighboring Egypt and Jordan, a proposal that has sparked outrage among Palestinian groups, human rights activists, and Arab nations.

Describing Gaza as a "demolition site," Trump stated on Saturday that he had spoken to Jordan's King Abdullah II about accepting Palestinians and planned to discuss the idea with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Trump claimed that this move could provide "peace and security" for displaced Palestinians and alleviate the humanitarian crisis caused by Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

“You're talking about probably a million and a half people, and we just clean out that whole thing,” Trump said, adding that the relocation could be temporary or permanent.

Opposition from Palestinian Groups and Arab Nations

Palestinian organizations, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad, condemned the proposal as an attempt to forcibly displace Palestinians from their land, evoking memories of the 1948 "Nakba," when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were displaced during the creation of Israel.

“This proposal falls within the framework of encouraging war crimes and crimes against humanity by forcing our people to leave their land,” Islamic Jihad declared.

Hamas vowed to resist any efforts to implement the plan, with senior official Bassem Naim stating that Palestinians “will foil such projects as they have done in the past.”

Jordan and Egypt also rejected Trump’s proposal

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi reiterated that "Jordan is for Jordanians and Palestine is for Palestinians," while Egyptian officials warned that forced displacement could undermine regional stability and the peace treaty with Israel.

Mixed Reaction in Israel

While the proposal faced global criticism, Israel’s far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich expressed support, calling the idea of relocating Palestinians an “out-of-the-box” solution. He added that it could help Palestinians build “better lives” elsewhere, though the move would be seen as deeply controversial internationally.

Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

The ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict has devastated Gaza, leaving the territory in ruins and creating a dire humanitarian crisis. According to the Gaza health ministry, more than 47,000 people have died since the conflict escalated in October 2023, and 70% of Gaza’s buildings have been destroyed or damaged.

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas strongly opposed any plans for displacement, calling such ideas unacceptable.
