A train on Egypt's northern coast collided with a truck in Borg el Arab, west of Alexandria, on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of two people and injuries to two others, according to a statement from the Alexandria governor's office. The accident occurred when a truck was on the tracks during a time they should have been closed for the passage of a passenger train. The train, which was traveling from El-Dabaa, was derailed by the impact.

Train accidents and derailments are frequent in Egypt, largely due to an aging railway infrastructure and longstanding issues with mismanagement. In response, the government has launched several initiatives in recent years to upgrade the country's rail network.

In 2018, President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi announced that approximately 250 billion Egyptian pounds (around $8.13 billion) would be required to revamp the neglected railway system.

Despite these efforts, tragic incidents continue to occur. In 2021, a collision between two trains in Tahta, southern Egypt, claimed 32 lives. Later that year, a train derailment in Qalyubia province resulted in 11 fatalities.

Egypt’s deadliest train disaster occurred in 2002 when over 300 people lost their lives in a fire aboard an overnight train traveling from Cairo to southern Egypt.
