Tigress Found Dead in Chhattisgarh’s Achanakmar Tiger Reserve, Raises Questions on Wildlife Safety

Tigress

In a tragic incident, a tigress was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the Achanakmar Tiger Reserve (ATR) in Chhattisgarh. The deceased tigress, identified as AKT-13, was approximately four years old.

Her carcass was discovered in the Lamni core area of the reserve near the Chirhatta forest. The case has sparked concerns over wildlife safety and forest management as the incident went unnoticed for two days.

Discovery of the Tigress

The incident came to light on January 23 when villagers traveling through the Chirhatta-Birarpani area noticed the lifeless tigress near bushes in the forest. Initially startled, the villagers approached cautiously, only to confirm that the animal had died.

They attempted to inform the forest department, but the delay in communication resulted in a two-day gap before officials were notified.

Lack of Awareness Raises Alarms

By the time forest officials arrived, the tigress’s body was already two days old. ATR officials conducted a post-mortem on January 25, adhering to the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) protocols, and later performed the last rites.

The cause of death remains unknown, and samples have been sent for further examination. The incident has raised serious concerns about the monitoring and management of wildlife in the reserve.

Despite ATR being a critical habitat for tigers, the delay in detecting the death points to lapses in patrolling and surveillance.

Questions Over Forest Department’s Efficiency

Villagers reported that attempts to contact ATR officials were met with difficulty, as their phone numbers were either unavailable or unreachable. This lack of immediate response highlights systemic issues in communication and accountability within the reserve’s management.
