Tigers from Kanha Tiger Reserve Spotted in Chhattisgarh Forests, Authorities Alert

Six tigers from Madhya Pradesh's Kanha Tiger Reserve have been observed in the forests of Chhattisgarh over the past few days. Experts believe the increasing tiger population and limited space in Kanha have driven these tigers to seek new habitats. The forest department, aided by camera traps and vigilance teams, is tracking their movements.
Population Pressure in Kanha
With Kanha Tiger Reserve housing over 100 tigers, the natural corridors connecting Kanha to regions like Achanakmar and Bhoramdeo in Chhattisgarh have become crucial for tiger movement. About 20 days ago, Kanha guards noticed the absence of six tigers. Investigations revealed that two tigers had moved to Achanakmar Tiger Reserve and four to the Bhoramdeo region.
Key Identification
One of the tigers, identified as "T-200," was spotted in Achanakmar Tiger Reserve via camera traps. This tiger was previously recorded in Kanha earlier this year. Puneet Goyal, Deputy Director of Kanha Tiger Reserve, stated, "The presence of T-200 in Chhattisgarh underscores the importance of active tiger corridors in facilitating movement and preserving genetic diversity."
Monitoring and Safety
In the Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi area, Mohar Singh Markam, SDO of the forest department, reported that one tiger was seen near rural settlements but has since moved towards Guru Ghasidas Tiger Reserve. Teams are closely monitoring the situation and ensuring safe pathways for the tigers to prevent human-wildlife conflict.
Significance of Tiger Corridors
Wildlife experts highlight that corridors are essential not only for tiger movement but also for enhancing genetic diversity, which is critical for their resilience to climate change and diseases. These natural linkages enable tigers to adapt and thrive across connected habitats.
This development underscores the importance of maintaining and protecting these corridors to support the conservation of tigers and other wildlife species. It also emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts between Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh to safeguard these majestic animals and their ecosystems.
