Sudden collapse of under construction tunnel, video viral as workers rush to save themselves
A partially constructed tunnel in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, collapsed but the workers at the site managed to evade getting trapped. A video of the incident shows the tunnel under construction, with machinery positioned outside. Suddenly, the tunnel gave way, causing panic among the workers present. Fortunately, no workers were inside the tunnel at the time of the collapse.
The tunnel collapse occurred at the Titri Tunnel portal in Sanjauli, Chalaunthi, on the Parwanoo-Shimla four-lane project. Stones and soil had begun to fall on Monday evening, prompting the removal of workers and machinery from the site. According to NHAI Project Manager Achal Jindal, the collapse happened while stabilizing the tunnel portal due to a landslide triggered by heavy rain.
Recent pre-monsoon rains have caused significant disruptions in Himachal Pradesh, including the closure of over 288 state roads and disconnection of five national highways. Rain has also affected power and water supplies in several districts. The Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast similar weather conditions for the coming days.
The collapse has posed a threat to the National Highway near the Dhalai junction, with continuous falling debris. The tunnel was part of a major infrastructure project to improve the four-lane road from Parwanoo to Shimla, with ongoing excavation work expected to stabilize the hillside.
