Successive bridge collapse in Bihar, PIL filed in top court, for structural audit

A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in Supreme Court seeking structural

A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in Supreme Court seeking structural audit of all bridges in Bihar following reports regarding collapse of nine bridges in last two weeks. The petition filed in the Supreme Court urges the Bihar Government to conduct a top-level structural audit of all existing and under-construction bridges in state.

Many netizens had suggested that such an audit is the need of the hour considering frequent bridge collapse cases that are being reported from Bihar. The plea seeks the demolition or retrofitting of weak structures and calls for real-time monitoring and a permanent expert body for oversight.

The petitioner is also an advocate by the name of Brajesh Singh who urged the top court to issue directions to the Bihar Government to order the audit.

The petitioner highlighted that within two years, three major under-construction bridges as well as several other large, medium and small bridges have collapsed.

"It is a matter of grave concern that in a state like Bihar, which is the most flood-prone state of India, the total flood-affected area in the state is 68,800 sq. km which is 73.06 per cent of the total geographical area. Hence such routine accrual of the incident of falling bridges in Bihar is more disastrous as the lives of people at large are at stake. Therefore the urgent intervention of this Hon'ble Court is required to save the lives of people, as the under-construction bridges before its accomplishment collapsed routinely," the petitioner said.
