Subramanian Swamy's petition on Rahul Gandhi citizenship, Delhi HC to hear on Sept 26
BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has taken to social media to post, "On Sept 26th the Delhi HC will hear my writ petition on Rahul Gandhi’s foreign citizenship ( British). If upheld , then RG will lose his Indian citizenship along with MP seat".
Swamy has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) with the Delhi High Court, requesting that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) cancel the Indian citizenship of Rahul Gandhi, a senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
Swamy announced the filing on X, stating, “My Associate Advocate Satya Sabharwal has submitted a PIL due to the Home Ministry's failure to take action against Rahul Gandhi and to explain why he has not been stripped of his Indian citizenship. Rahul Gandhi has not responded to the Home Ministry’s queries, which prompted this PIL. I also extend my thanks to Associates Vishesh Kanoria.”
Earlier, in 2019, Swamy had approached the Ministry of Home Affairs, alleging that a UK-based firm named Backops Limited, registered in 2003, listed Rahul Gandhi as one of its directors and secretary. According to a Bar and Bench report, Swamy claimed that the firm's annual returns from October 10, 2005, and October 31, 2006, showed Gandhi declaring his nationality as British. The report also mentions that the dissolution application for Backops Limited on February 17, 2009, again listed Gandhi’s nationality as British.
