Clashes in Karnataka's Mandya district during a Ganpati immersion procession lead to violence, stone pelting, and the burning of shops. Police enforce restrictions while political leaders call for peace and swift action to restore law and order.

Stone pelting

Two groups clashed in Karnataka's Mandya district on Wednesday, September 12, following stone pelting at a Ganpati idol immersion procession in Nagamangala town. The violence escalated, resulting in the burning of several shops and vehicles. The clashes reportedly began when a group of youths were taking a Ganpati idol for immersion. As the procession passed by a dargah, a few miscreants allegedly threw stones at them, triggering the violence. In response, local authorities imposed restrictive orders, and the police are on high alert to prevent further escalation.

Members of the Hindu community protested at the local police station, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible. Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy condemned the incident, criticizing the Congress-led state government for appeasing certain communities for political gain. He urged immediate action to restore peace in the area. Karnataka SDPI chief Abdul Majeed also called for swift intervention, urging Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to deploy additional police forces and take strict measures against groups trying to disrupt communal harmony. He emphasized the need for maintaining peace and protecting the state's reputation.

Prohibitory orders imposed in Mandya district's Nagamangala after a group of miscreants set shops on fire, and two police staff were injured. I have no information related to the machete or other weapons used in the clash. Investigation is underway. We are verifying the reasons for the instigation, our officers are on duty. We have detained a few people and a search is going on. Restriction orders will continue: MB Boralingaiah, South Division IGP
